Q: Who is your favorite character in the Vampire Academy series?

A: She doesn’t really have a favorite, but Adrian and Abe have the best lines.

Q: Who is your favorite character in all of your books?

A: Georgina because Succubus Blues was her first book to get published, and also because she is most like her in sense of humor and age (kind of, Georgina’s actually like 1500 years old, but to humans she looks around Richelle’s age). Richelle said when she writes as Rose, she has to ask herself, “Is this what a 17 year old would do, or what a 34 year old would do?”

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

A: She wanted to write a YA series, and had already written about angels and demons and faeries so decided vampires were the next step. No one was writing about vampires (at the time)

Q: How did you come up with Dimitri?

A: She wishes she had an amazing story for Dimitri such as, “One day I was driving down the road and my car got a flat tire. This big tall Russian guy pulled over and…” or “I had a dream that… ” but she says that’s not how it went. She needed someone who was opposite of Rose who was also her match, and that person needed to have lots of self control, life experience (and therefore be older), and she made him Russian because Russia and Romania are the home countries of the Moroi race.

Q: How did you come up with Abe’s last name?

A: She did research to find a Turkish last name. (The girl who asked this question is Polish and has the same last name)

Q: Have you based anything in your books off of real life?

A: Not really, but she did get inspiration for Abe’s wardrobe from a real guy who was known as “That Pirate Guy.” Abe’s personality was not based off the same guy, however.

Q: At the NYC signing, you said you might write about Rose again in a few years. Is that a possibility, or are you completely comfortable ending Rose’s story with Last Sacrifice?

A: She said she needs a break from Rose and that while the spin-off series, Bloodlines, is going on, we should all assume Rose is living a happy life. She might re-visit Rose later, but for now Rose needs rest because she can’t write a book about Rose living a happy (almost) normal live. If she writes another book about Rose, it won’t be good for Rose.

Penguin Between the lines a réalisé une interview de Richelle dont voici les passages les plus intéressants.

Which character from VA do you see the most of yourself in?

There’s no one character I’m like. Instead, I’d say they all have little pieces of me. One may have my sense of humor, another may have my attitude toward problem solving, etc. A lot of people assume Rose is the most like me, since she’s the lead, but if anything, we’re complete opposites! I’m much more cautious than she is.

In your opinion, what is it about the vampire genre that gets young adult readers so hooked?

That’s the million dollar question, and six books later, I still don’t have a good answer. Sometimes I think it’s because vampires are one of the more approachable “monsters” out there. They look human and sometimes behave human, which makes them relatable. At the same time, they’re still exotic and otherworldly enough to appeal to lovers of fantasy. Vampires end up being a perfect mix.

Will there be a spin-off series for the Vampire Academy Series?

Yes. The spin-off will follow other characters from the Vampire Academy books and will be released in August 2011. Most of the details about the series are under wraps right now, but readers can expect to learn more in mid-January 2011.

Was there an event or aspect in your life that inspired you to write the beautiful love story of Dimitri and Rose in Vampire Academy?

I’m afraid not! It was just a story I wanted to tell, one that simply evolved from my imagination. A lot of people would love for Dimitri to be based on a real person. Who knows? Maybe he’s out there somewhere!
