Neuf histoires d’amour inédites d’amour impossible, signées par Anne Rice, l’auteur d’Entretien avec un vampire, et les maitresses du fantastique : Rachel Caine, Melissa de la Cruz, Tessa Gratton et Maggie Stiefvater.
Mon avis
Je n’ai jamais aimé le format des nouvelles, c’est toujours trop court et pas assez développé lorsque l’idée est intéressante. De manière surprenante, j’ai été séduite par ce recueil totalement inédit pour la France puisqu’il s’agit de la compilation de certaines nouvelles éditées ou publiées sur les sites des auteurs, et que donc ce recueil n’est jamais sorti sous ce format aux Etats-Unis.
Il s’agit donc de 9 nouvelles, d’une dizaine de pages chacune à part celle d’Anne Rice qui en fait 60, de 5 auteurs différentes.
La nouvelle qui donne le titre au recueil est celle d’Anne Rise et est bien la tête de pont de l’ouvrage. On est agréablement satisfait de la qualité de l’écriture de l’auteur, de l’ambiance gothique et sombre, et de l’ambiguïté qui découle de la lecture. L’histoire est mystérieuse et intrigante.
Les autres histoires sont également réussies. La plume de Maggie Stiefvater est toujours aussi belle, explorant plusieurs thèmes complètement inédits et inattendus, et réussissant toujours à mettre de la poésie dans ses mots. A noter qu’une de ses 3 histoires représente le récit à l’origine de son roman Frisson. Tessa Gratton, sa camarade de plume (avec Brenna Yovanoff) et auteur de The Replacement, confirme dans ses 2 nouvelles son goût pour les atmosphères gothiques et sombres, à la fois fascinantes et inquiétantes. Melissa de la Cruz, l'auteur des Vampires de Manhattan surprend avec son histoire au style simple mais porteur d’émotion. Les récits de Rachel Caine, dont une nouvelle racontant l’histoire de Sam de la saga Vampire City, sont un ton en-dessous et souffrent de la comparaison face au style et à l’originalité des autres auteurs.
On sent que les auteurs se sont lâchées dans l’écriture de leurs histoires. Il n’y a pas nécessairement de happy end ou de réponses à toutes les questions, mais même si parfois on a envie d’en avoir davantage, les nouvelles se suffisent amplement à elles-mêmes.
J’ai été emballée par ce recueil inédit, plus que les précédents qui avaient été publiés par Black Moon, et j’espère que cette initiative se répétera avec des nouvelles d’aussi bonne qualité qui seront dénichées.

Relationship to the Volturi: As the Volturi were taking over Egypt, as a means of survival Amun and Kebi submitted to the Volturi leaving Amun bitter at being forced to comply with the Volturi’s demands. Amun has since tried to gather his own talented force but Aro has enjoyed toying with Amun by luring gifted individuals away from Amun’s coven and into the Volturi guard.

Relationship to the Cullens: All the members of the Irish coven are old friends of Carlisle. They come to Forks to help their old friend stand against the Volturi threat.
Relationship to the Volturi: The Irish have no previous relationship with the Volturi. During her first century as a vampire, Siobhan met a few Volturi guards and considered approaching the Volturi for official consideration, but ultimately she never did.

Relationship to the Cullens: Always looking for an opportunity to fight the Volturi, the Romanian’s hear the Cullens are standing up to the Volturi and come to forks in hopes of fighting and overthrowing the Volturi.
Relationship to the Volturi: The Romanian coven ruled the vampire world until the Volturi decimated the coven and took over power. When the Romanians were overthrown, both Stefan & Vladimir lost their mates during the battles. They constantly search for ways to damage the Volturi’s power & take any possible revenge against them. The Volturi periodically send vampires after them, but the Romanian Coven remains on guard against them.
