Le nouveau Jennifer L Armentrout est un roman YA sur une héroïne traumatisée par son enfance rempli d’abus. Elle a appris très jeune qu’il ne fallait pas faire de bruit et ne pas se faire remarquer pour éviter les ennuis, et cela l’a conditionnée à s’effacer. Elle a cependant des velléités de normalité et s’inscrit au lycée pour sa dernière année. Elle y retrouve Ryder, un autre enfant placé avec elle qui lui avait promis de la protéger pour toujours…

J’ai eu beaucoup de sympathie pour Mallory car, à un niveau beaucoup plus relatif bien évidemment, j’ai parfois eu du mal à dire à voix haute ce que je pense par peur du jugement des autres, et je finissais par me taire. Maintenant je me fous de leur réaction lol mais du coup j’ai adhéré à la narration de la jeune fille, en cela bien aidé par les descriptions psychologiques de JLA. Je l’encourageais mentalement durant la lecture et la félicitais à chaque fois qu’elle exprimait fermement son opinion.

JLA a le chic pour créer des héros idéalisés, tout gentils et loyaux. Ryder est en cela une perfection : il a grandi trop vite à cause de son enfance mais il est tellement mature, compréhensif et protecteur qu’on a du mal à réaliser que ça soit crédible chez un homme (lol), et encore moins un adolescent de 17 ans. Mais c’est pas grave, on fond devant lui comme Mallory ♥

Ce n’est pas le meilleur roman YA de l’auteur, mais il reste prenant et mignon. Il ne se passe pas grand-chose niveau action, il s’agit davantage d’un roman basé sur la psychologie des deux personnages principaux et de leur relation, mais ça marche et j’ai lu ce roman d’une traite avec grand plaisir.
