Sarai was only fourteen when her mother uprooted her to live in Mexico with a notorious drug lord. Over time she forgot what it was like to live a normal life, but she never let go of her hope to escape the compound where she has been held for the past nine years.

Victor is a cold-blooded assassin who, like Sarai, has known only death and violence since he was a young boy. When Victor arrives at the compound to collect details and payment for a hit, Sarai sees him as her only opportunity for escape. But things don’t go as planned and instead of finding transport back to Tucson, she finds herself free from one dangerous man and caught in the clutches of another.

While on the run, Victor strays from his primal nature as he succumbs to his conscience and resolves to help Sarai. As they grow closer, he finds himself willing to risk everything to keep her alive; even his relationship with his devoted brother and liaison, Niklas, who now like everyone else wants Sarai dead.

As Victor and Sarai slowly build a trust, the differences between them seem to lessen, and an unlikely attraction intensifies. But Victor’s brutal skills and experience may not be enough in the end to save her, as the power she unknowingly holds over him may ultimately be what gets her killed.

Mon avis

Il ne s’agit pas du tout d’une romance ou d’un roman New Adult, il s’agit vraiment d’un thriller. JA Redmerski m’a donc bien surprise, après avoir écrit The Edge of Never.

Sarai a été vendue à un baron de la drogue au Mexique à 14 ans, et est depuis devenue sa maitresse contrainte et forcée. Elle réussit à s’échapper plusieurs années après, lorsque Victor, un américain, est venu traiter avec son ravisseur. Elle apprend certaines choses sur son sauveur et alors qu’elle pensait enfin être en sécurité, elle va à nouveau replonger dans un monde de violence.

Sarai est un personnage déphasé mais elle reste courageuse et vindicative même après tout ce qu’elle a subi. Victor est davantage intéressant et intriguant car il garde sa part de mystère, avec son comportement patibulaire et laconique et les pensées qu’il cache. Tout comme Sarai, on aime à s’approcher de la flamme et à jouer avec le feu du danger qu’il dégage, quitte à se bruler les ailes de plaisir. J’aurai aimé en voir davantage de son côté. La folle course-poursuite de Victor et Sarai est décrite à un rythme fou et de plus en plus dangereux.

L’intrigue est sympa à suivre mais je ne m’attendais donc pas du tout à ça, et j’ai donc eu du mal à accrocher à l’histoire et aux personnages. J’avoue que je prévoyais de la romance et j’y ai cru jusqu’au bout, et ce n’était pas du tout ça au final, donc j’ai été assez déçue de ma lecture, même si j’ai trouvé que l’aspect thriller était bien mené.
